Sculptures

An interesting form of art that is expressed as a three-dimensional piece that combines various elements is referred to as a sculpture. Materials used range from rocks, marble, metal, glass, wood and even plastic. Sculptors can create or assemble these works of art by fusing the materials together and creating a more permanent and durable art piece. The intent is to make the expression as permanent as possible since sculptures are often used as public art. Expensive materials like bronze, limestone, porphyry, and granite can be used alone or combined with precious materials and stones such as gold, silver, jade, and ivory. These expensive elements were even used in sculpting statues in Ancient Greece. They served as an adornment in the very exclusive palaces and were known chryselephantine. There are less expensive materials that are commonly used for sculpting as well. This will include glass, ceramics and wood. Cast metals such as pewter and spelter are also very popular.

The moulding involved in creating these art pieces is what gave rise to the popular term of “plastic art” when referring to sculptures. These pieces are often painted and when the paint starts fading, are restored to its original beauty by artists as well. The various painting techniques include tempera or oil painting, aerosol painting, enamel painting gilding and sandblasting. In modern times, sculptors are constantly looking for new materials and new techniques to express art. Even everyday objects like trash, machine parts and utensils all make up as good medium. With sculpture art, the expression can be as limitless as the imagination.
