The materials and techniques used by an artist to produce his work of art are often referred to as the media used. In traditional forms, the media for drawing will include the dry tool that was used to create the art in the base to which it was transferred. The dry tool can be a pencil, a pastel crayon, a charcoal stick or a pen. The typical base onto which the tool produces art can take the form of canvas, paper, wood and many other surfaces.
If we go with traditional painting, the canvas can come to life through the use of paint which can come using oil or water as a base mixed with the color pigments. Media therefore refers to both the paint and the base that was used to create the artwork.

Mixed media as a category can feature all types of art pieces that are not fully belonging to any of the “pure” categories. In some cases the piece has an eccentricity in the way it was constructed that adds interest and meaning to its value. In other cases, the item is a combination of various elements gives it an entirely separate category that is not fully defined yet remains as interesting as its object of expression.
