The term collage came from the French word “coller” which means glue. It is an assembly of different forms of formal visual art that creates a new whole. A collage may incorporate newspaper or magazine clippings with ribbons and even bits of colored or hand-made papers. One can also use portions of artwork, photographs, bottle caps and other found objects which are all glued to a piece of paper or canvas. The origins of collage can be traced back hundreds of years, but it is not until the early part of the 20th century that this technique became very popular.

Collage is now known as modern art. It has been associated with the beginnings of early modernism. The artistic creativity involved in patching new elements into the canvass gives an added perspective and depth in the artwork produced. Collage then became known as the bridge between painting and sculpture. There was a methodical reexamination and planning involved in creating a surface within a surface, each element giving a new characteristic to the other. In some instances, the collage was used to create a tongue-in-cheek statement. Pasting bits of newspaper in the painting references the current events with the content of the art, thereby giving a deeper meaning to the collision of art and everyday life.
