Animal Art dates back centuries. The cave paintings of bulls in Altamira, Northern Spain was discovered in 1879 by a little girl named Maria. This was probably the first revelation of animal art. No one had any idea that our ancestors were capable of producing this kind of artistic work during the early periods of our history. The little girls father was a Spanish nobleman and an amateur archeologist. Later in 1903, a young French priest named Henri Breuil began making copies of the paintings. This was when the world became aware of the historical and artistic treasures in the cave.
Later in 1940, more cave paintings were revealed at Lascaux, France. Again these paintings featured animals. These were beautiful paintings of horses that even Picasso was astounded by the imagery of strength and grace that the artist was able to depict. The pictures found in caves depict the ordinariness of the environment that our ancestors lived in yet it shouted the extraordinary keenness for capturing their intimate co-existence with the animals around them.
Today, man’s fondness of animals continues to be seen through animal art. Whether in paintings, sculptures, drawings and digital art, we continue to enjoy these unique creatures, their character, their movement, and their grace as they are depicted in the various art forms.
