"Art Cards, Editions and Originals" is what best describes the ACEO Art Cards. These miniatures, sized similarly as a trading card at 3.5 inches by 2.5 inches, have a rich history. They were extremely popular in the 16th century. These miniature portraits gave men their thrill when then used the painted nudes of their mistresses as their wallet "photos". Rich families would often exchange these when arranging marriages for their children. Even Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife of Henry the Eight was not spared from the hazards of being a pocket portrait. Henry the Eight divorced her after the artist was given too much "artistic license".
It was the French artists who first picked up on the idea of using the Art cards for advertising. It was traded during the Impressionist Age so that artists can study each other's style and techniques. The cards were also used by artists for barter in exchange of supplies, food and lodging
When "baseball" cards made their appearance in 1887, this gave way to the trading game. Cards became collectibles and were often sold to the public together with bubble gum, chewing tobacco and cracker jacks. In the 1960s, the modern 2.5 x 3.5 size was standardized.
Today, artists can be lauded for the resurgence of hand made art cards for sale and trade. They wanted the general public to join in the fun of trading these unique miniature art pieces. Hence, they made these little art pieces available for sale at remarkably low prices. The cards are sold either as an original or as an edition. The art can be made from different mediums and can feature a wide range of subjects. From watercolor to oil, from acrylic to pastels, one can find abstract, surrealism, impressionism and every other style you can think of. Truly, this trade is as exciting as the feelings that art evokes in you.
